Birding Tour Thailand: Central and Northern Thailand 2018

This three-week Birding Tour Thailand adventure commences in Bangkok, before heading south to the magnificent Kaeng Krachan National Park, home to numerous pittas, broadbills, hornbills, and woodpeckers. We spend time birding the different altitudes within the park, each home to a different set of birds, before we move across to the coast, where we focus our attention on a vast array of shorebirds/waders, including the incredible Spoon-billed Sandpiper. Our next stop is the world-famous Khao Yai National Park, where we will look for Siamese Fireback and Silver Pheasant, along with many other targets, like Great Hornbill.

After our time in central Thailand we take a short flight to the mountains of northern Thailand, flying into Chiang Mai. While in the north we will visit Doi Inthanon National Park, the highest mountain in Thailand and home to a number of birds found nowhere else in the country. We will spend a few days birding across the different altitudes here before moving down to an area of lowland forest, home to the giant Great Slaty Woodpecker. The coming week will see us visit several different mountain ranges, where we will look for overwintering Chinese migrants as well as some exciting resident species like Mrs. Hume’s Pheasant and Himalayan Cutia. We will also spend time at the huge Chiang Saen Lake and adjacent farmland with a large Pied Harrier roost and will keep an eye out for the very rare Baer’s Pochard.

The tour visits some very impressive natural and manmade scenery, samples some delicious Thai cuisine, and should result in a trip list of around 450 species, with usually a rarity or two thrown in. Several of the sites visited offer very good photographic opportunities.

We just returned from our trip to Thailand. It was wonderful. Thank you very much for arranging our tour with Andy Walker. He was the best guide we ever had. He is knowledgeable, easy going, hard working, and has all the qualities that people expect from a guide. We really enjoyed birding with him. We would be happy to go birding with him any time and would highly recommend him as a guide to any of our friends. Thanks again for giving us the opportunity to have him as our guide.
