Owls of Borneo

Hot steamy nights in the lowland jungles of Borneo can reveal some great owl species. That said, the cool evenings up in the Crocker Range can also be rewarding. Thankfully, we can do both.

Birding along the Kinabatangan River at night is a great place to not only spot Buffy Fish Owl, but also several other species of birds that roost along. The forests of the Danum Valley hold Reddish and Collared Scops Owl, Oriental Bay Owl, and Brown Wood Owl as well as frogmouths. The highlands are home to the aptly named Mountain Scops Owl and Collared Owlet.

We’ll also have a chance to boat over to Mantanani Island to find the range-restricted Mantanani Scops Owl. Please contact us to custom-make an owl tour for you.

What our clients say

We spent three weeks with Andy in Thailand and enjoyed the trip thoroughly. Andy worked so hard to find the birds, and get us on them.  He was very patient and took the time we needed. He knew all the best places to go, knew what birds would be expected, identified them in an instant  and still managed to find some pretty good rarities along with the “known birds”, Himalayan Cutia anyone? And we spent literally hours getting great looks at Spoon-billed Sandpiper.  Andy got us very close without disturbing the birds or any other birders.  It was a highlight of the trip.  We are hoping to see Andy in York later this year for a days birding on his home patch!
